Server Symbols (Greek Letters)

Post by Invisible Egg! »

Δ Delta
Θ Theta
Λ Lambda
Σ Sigma
Ω Omega

I can't believe it took me so long to remember how to do this! For instance, just type "& Omega ;" (without the spaces) and you get "Ω".

That is one thing I don't get about the game, "The World". If the story it is based on is Germanic in origin, then why use Greek symbols to separate the servers?

I have no idea, but they did use germanic runes on the Book of Twilight, and also on The World's login screen.

the world originated from german. At least the epitaph did, as seen in the intro of infection.

Greek was one of the first languages that is still used today. Germanic symbols are the runes, which are on some players. That's what I can remember and I think that's it.

C'mon you guys! The point of this topic was to explain how to use the greek letters when you post, not to debate greek vs. germanic alphabets. I was just trying to provide some useful information.

That's a simple question. Greek letters are often used to identify different Types of things. Type &alpha and such. It's an alternate alphabet that most everyone knows. It just sounds cooler that A Server, B Server ...

Yeah, like roman numerals. Ω and Θ is like I and II.

Yep, Russian is based off of it, as opposed to Latin like most other European languages.

All the network servers at my school are named after the greek gods(Hermes, Zeus, Nike...)

It's just another way of classifying things. Nothing special about it. Except Greek letters have a sort of "Brain Power" feel to it. Maybe I've just played too much Earthbound(Mother2).

When spoken and written, German sounds and looks cool. However, the only "special" symbols in the alphabet aren't that symbolish or artsy, Greek, however, is. The computer I had from 11-13 was named Odin, and the scanner was Freya, the printer was Loki [it was PURE evil], and the mouse was Slepindir, and my Digicam was Yggdrasil, but I named all my Folders by Greek alphabet. Greek is more titlish and... er, labelish. But Germanic and other various mythological references make better names than they do labels. Or... like Ragnarok Online uses the Ragnarok: Into the Abyss character names as Server names. :3 Also, AFAIK, people don't really know it's based off the German Epitaph.

 Don't forget Qoppa and Digamma. They look sort of like Q and F. There not used anymore though, Qoppa was to close to kappa. I think Digamma had a ' J and I ' sound to it, but it was probably add to gamma, giving it more sounds than. So now Gamma has the sound of 'G' 'J' 'I' and one that sounds like 'Hhhck'(sort of a hissing sound, or the spanish J, and previously used 3 or 4 letters to put on paper).

One of my teachers in College was Greek. Tought Calculus. His accent was cool. He said Hypotenous like "Hee Po Ti Nus".

None of it all matters really. Only that Greek is cool.
