Its generally a good idea to put a lot of thought into something the first time. Fictional storylines tend to stink when you don't. As a side note, it seems to be even more important (in my opinion) when it happens to be fan fiction, or, say, a fan role-play. Because now, you have to make sure it FITS with the series you based it off of. So...I'd say it is a good idea to go with the plan you (CRTwenty I mean) just mentioned (Starting another one when this one is done, except putting more thought into it.
Then again, I shouldn't say anything. I had to learn that lesson several times...Don't ask. -_-'

Yeah, it's basically that 'do it right the first time' thing. Of course, there's also the 'all work and no play', so if you don't mind the impossibility of your storyline, just have fun and use DD against those hacked monsters.

Useful ideas? *blink* Erm. Ideas. Yeah. Give me a minute on that one.
You could always base the RPG on the games, just taking out Kite and Blackrose and whatnot. Have the events happen, and the people have to find ways to solve them. You could have little mini events to get things like Data Drain or gate Hacking, and the Phases could run around mucking things up.

I've been in about 20something rpgs and have run about 10 of them, and most of them were successful.Invisible Egg! wrote:How many of you have any idea how to run an RPG?
Indeed it is, when you don't have much experience. And finally...Seriously, it's quite complicated.
Ok, I wasn't bashing him. And I did give him a useful idea, I'll quote myself,Instead of bashing CRtwenty about a board he didn't even start, how about offering some useful ideas?
To CRtwenty: Another idea would be to have a log-book. Organize your thoughts. And It's good to hear other's critizism, you can learn something from it, don't take it as bashing, unless someone says something stupid like, "Duh, your RPG is really gay!", that type of person just needs to be ignored.Hema wrote:Why not try advertising an RPG that has been thought and planned out correctly?
But I must admit, I was a little harsh. Pardon ^.^

I have to admit, a .hack RPG would be somewhat boring to those who are hoping for lots of fighting, action, etc etc... As it would be about the same as .hack//SIGN. It's a lot of talk and a lot of thinking.
It would work for something like a Tabletop RPG, as there is an official one in the works already.
However, for a messageboard RP, or chatroom RP, you'd be somewhat limited in what you can and cannot do. As .hack takes place in a simulated world, don't expect to be faced with life-endangering situations day in and day out, since it's just a game.
If someone decided to take the lead and introduce some 'normal' players to a hacked monster, well, that would be interesting!
But having a game full of hackers, and justifying it like that.... To be honest, it takes away from the interest of .hack themed RP. Not everyone is -supposed- to have powers like that. In the end, it becomes something like a powergamer haven, or twinkfest, or any number of childish antics that involve over-powered people fighting against each other, etc etc, getting into debates over what you can and cannot do with your l33t hacking powers...
To be honest, having RPed in a .hack cast for almost a year now, I can say that hacked characters and hackers just.. don't fit in with the rest of the characters that are played. We focus on plots and scenes that focus on the interaction between the characters, not fights, or powers, or hacking or whatever. It's fun because the .hack characters have distinct personalities... Two personalities to play with. Some characters like to act different in 'The World' than they do in real life, and some characters just do what they want, acting like the players they are. That's a distinction that's fun to play with, and creating original characters allows for a great range of character types and personalities.
If you really need a better concept for a free-form .hack RPG, why not try something like this?
'You are players in Fragments, the beta of 'The World', before there were even signs of the Twilight. This game is constantly being changed, edited, filled with rollbacks, patches, or other updates. You and your friends are just trying to play like anyone else, but sometimes it's hard to deal with the oddness that is inherent in any test-phase MMORPG.'
(this allows for a bit more freedom in character class, character type, fields, battle systems, etc. Go nuts! Have fun! Be creative!)
'It's fun, but to be honest, some of the things that pop up every once in a while can be kinda creepy! Seeing the Blue Knights suddenly running around in the field you just found the other day, and having it disappearing the next time you try to go there, and then coming back the next week to find it back to the way it was... Well, you can get used to it, right?'
(You can play one of the Blue Knights, chasing down errors and bugs that cause some players to have trouble.. Think of all the fun -that- would cause! Think of the interesting interactions you could have with that, and how normal players would talk to a Blue Knight.. would they be curious about the bugs here and there? Would the Blue Knight try to ask players if they saw anything weird they would like to report?)
Anyway, that's just something I thought of off the top of my head. Once again, it caters mostly to the RPers who find enjoyment out of conversations and daily interactions, which is what 'The World' is all about, not the type who likes to go around fighting against others. Then again, maybe you have some power-hungry types who keep trying to level and compete with others. Is PKing implimented yet, or is the competition the friendly sort?
But that's the kind of RPG I'd be more tempted to play in, honestly, instead of an all-out hackwar.

Most of the subs I've got use Crimson, so don't relagate that translation solely to the dub.FireDraconian wrote:Like he said, Blue Knights were in Fragments.
Scarlet Knights is another name for the Crimson Knights. Scarlet is the name used for them in all of the subs I've seen, so I use it. Crimson is what is used in the dub.

I have quite a good idea of how to run an RPG. Because I've been through SEVERAL ones that didn't turn out all that successful.Invisible Egg! wrote:How many of you have any idea how to run an RPG? I didn't mean to be harsh or anything.
Well, knowing little more about the .hack series other than Infection and SIGN, the only 'useful' idea I could think of offering (besides putting great thought into it) was to take out the whole hacker plot due to several reasons. Which everyone else happens to have mentioned. Heh?

Let me repeat what I said.Gray wrote:Most of the subs I've got use Crimson, so don't relagate that translation solely to the dub.FireDraconian wrote:Like he said, Blue Knights were in Fragments.

"...in all of the subs I've seen..."
Notice the lack of "all the subs in existance without fail".

I watch the DVD's in Japanese with sublititles, and its Exacty the same! The biggest difference is a added word in the Dub to make the words fit in the mouth. Example: "Early in life humins hands look like Spachulas." -Bear in Sub. "Early in life humins hands look like Kitchen Spachulas" -Bear in Dub.
