it's not quite "some versions"
all the original versions of the game (in japanese) had it as a cross. The american one changed it back to avoid chaos and confusion like this (presumably), but the thing that bugs me it that the script clearly calls it a cross, describing it in the same way that people describe in in the japanese versions of the games...

Exactly what I said. Some versions. And not others, by which I meant the American ones.

I agree, it was most likely to avoid this type of confusion. However, does it ever explain why it was changed to a cross? Either in the game or outside it? Or is it simply left unsaid?

I don't believe anyone has said anything about it yet. It may have been changed for TV broadcast because of possible religious issues, but they would have more freedom in a game to do something like that, and so they went with what may have been the 'original plan', which is having Skeith with that cross.

I can't say for sure, and I don't know if it's ever been answered officially, either.

um... if the japanese SIGN - a cross, and the japanese games - cross, The script should've written it as a cross too, why is it confusing? 0.o;

*rewatched eps 26, oh yeah, it's a Q ^^;; this is weird ^^;; maybe they edited it while they are making the US games to avoid confusion for the americans ^^;;

Because you are wrong. See, it's Japanese sign = Q, Japanese games = cross. That's why it's confusing.

And so far, nothing has been edited at all in the SIGN anime. The Q has always been there.

ehe, though I really think this might just have been someone's creative license going on, since EVERYTHING written or spoken in the Japanese .hack stuff refers to it as a cross... ^^;

Umm...
there's some secret info on the .hack//LIMINALITY DVDs my bro was able to access, like a cheat code thing... It says on there that in .hack//SIGN and //INFECTION they are 2 different versions of 'The World,' so perhaps the staff would have changed because of the update?
Does that make any sense?

Well I doubt your brother would be the first person to acsess such a thing because people out there have searched hard, but it is certyainly a possible way things have gone, aside Orca/Balmung being in both, and all the charatcers form //SIGN having models in the games. ^_^

Sounds like your brother is full of BS; my friend is a l337 haxx0rz/craxx0rz, and he's opened and rewritten parts of the DVD and game for fun (he tried to make Piroshi have Balmung's avatar, but his burn messed up or something). He's shared what he's found with me *coughs*GAME MOVIES*coughs* and he's never found anything remotely like that. Ontop of that, see the cross in Liminality, and how would you meet Mimiru and Bear and A-20 if they were on this "other version" of The World? And if you mean different versions by The World game upgrades, why would Skeith's staff be affected by that? Afaik, CC Corp doesn't even know he exists.

As I said the models for all the //SIGN characters are in the game so two different versions is h ighly unlikely. ^_^

But there's two different models of the .hack//SIGN characters in the games.
The old models of the .hack//SIGN characters, are when you have the game set on the Japanese voices. An the new models of the .hack//SIGN characters, are when you have the game set on the English voices.

Or, did I read what you typed wrong? An you meant something else?

Wouldn't the two models for the //SIGN characters be:

A. Ghost/Memory form
B. Normal Form

Because I don't think they would do any changes to their basic character design...

Most likely, yes.

And Rubedo, you are correct, that's what I meant. ^_^
