Story Over Action in .hack//SIGN

Artwork is a big thing with me in anime, so I'd have to say that was the first thing that attracted me to .hack. I loved Sadamoto's character designs. //SIGN was also the first character driven/dialogue heavy anime that really got me into that sort of storytelling, having watched action oriented fantasy and comedy series beforehand (Lodoss War and Slayers, for example).
I enjoy the type of stories that let you take the time to immerse yourself in the world and the characters inside it. That way, you can sympathize with the characters problems and actually care when something happens to them. At least, I did.
If anything, SIGN proves that you don't need a ton of action to move a story along.

At first, I only watched because I found that Tsukasa's personality and my personality almost match perfectly. However, as time moved on I grew curious about the feline type player character known as Maha. Then later the game came out for the Playstation II and I began to become ensnared in the ultimate storyline and of course the feline type player character Mia. This is when I started working on a book of mine that is known as The Tides of Destiny. So, I guess you could say that the storyline of the .hack game series and .hack//SIGN kind of inspired me to write. But, as of now, I still watch it only to see Maha.

...you know i need my *WHACK* stick now...anyway, jumping back on the original topic, i perferred the lack of action, as i wouldn't like to be watching 25 min. of two people x number of yards away from each other, staring and making a low growl. The lack of action in .hack is what made it very drama-like, which is a genre of anime that i like a lot.
You're only young once, but you're NEVER too old to be immature.
Aaah, yes... I can see it now...
Sora: Grr! I will defeat you! *angrily stares*
Crim: Hah! Foolish one, for it is I who will defeat you! *angrily stares back*
Sora: (thinking) My, for he is not a foe to be underestimated. I must not attack at the wrong moment.
Crim: So, are you going to fight, ya monkey?!
Sora: Hah! I am no monkey! It is YOU who is the monkey!
Crim: [ insert lame insult here]
Sora: [ insert another lame insult]
Crim: HIYA!
[ insert 4568348972389 minute-long battle]
Sora: *jumps back* Huff, huff! I must not fail!
I'll end it there ;P

And here I thought an apology would be enough. Ever hear of the philosophy that once someone admits their wrong they're immediately forgiven of that wrongdoing? Now I've gone too far, back to the topic. Drama anime seems to be a genre that is largely overlooked. Most anime shown on television is either comedy or action, more often action. I'm hoping that the arrival of WHR in February on CN's Adult Swim will signal a change in this.

Please allow me to introduce myself, I'm a man of wealth and taste. I've been around for a long long year, stole many a man's soul and faith.
*pulls out a broom and sweeps out offtopic posts* Don't mind me. Carry on...
Note, please do NOT go off topic on this board. This is the one board we stress that on and do not give an leniecy (bah. can't spell when I'm half asleep) to it on, because you're supposed to be discussing spoilers here.
I've said it in announcements. Please make sure you know this. Thanks. ._.

Budget Zen: When you see something so stupid that your mind goes blank rather than try to rationalize it.
Even though I love anime such as Rurouni Kenshin and InuYasha which have plenty of action, I enjoyed .hack a LOT more. (BTW, Limits could be considered as Rock music, I guess)) Anyway, back on Topic, I think had there been extreme action in .hack, everything else would've been less than what it actually is now: one of the BEST animes of all time. Hmm..maybe not, looking at Geneshaft, but still. After DBZ, I'm glad that .hack//SIGN DOES NOT have a lot of action. Maybe it's because I've seen nearly every single episode about 10 times. And there are 300 of those! I don't get tired of .hack's storyline everytime I see it, so maybe my mind is getting too full of stuff and I get all confused.....
Imagine Tsukasa being all bulky and fighting all the time. That is very scary. Maybe because I've seen all the episodes and he doesn't seem to want to fight...

From what I've seen from both the game and the series...
There are not alot of fighting at all.. well.. in some cases, yes, but, they don't seem to want to show the fighting... it's looks more like a online mystery novel.....rahter than a game... and the series goes for the same thing.
When I watch the game's scenes, I don't seem to get sick and tired of watching them.. rather wanting to see them even more to try to find out what the hell is going on....

Chongara love info to help big guy understand .hack, eh?
Yea... the two or three times that he ISN'T depressed sure do make a difference... really, what is with that character model that makes people depressed? Tsukasa is angsty, Elk is sad, and Hotaru has more crying then almost any of the other .hack characters!Duskino wrote:Elk is the seventh grader. And he's not all depressed :p
