This -is- a dictatorship, for the most part. Duh. It always has been. Boards always are. Dictatorship is a perfectly workable governmental system. However, that's being ideal. Dictatorships are given a bad name because of the existing dictatorships in the world.
And whether the board dries up or not.. that's yet to be seen. But you know, complaining about avatars hardly affects anything of actual importance on the board. The board would still be a discussion board even if we HAD no avatars. So something silly and inconsequential like avatars really isn't our concern.
And your attitude about it certainly isn't making us any more willing to listen to you. If you have a problem with the way we moderate, that's fine. If you want to complain about it publicly, that's fine too. But once we get tired of playing with you, it's unlikely we'll put up with your attitude much longer.
And just so you know, I'm not feeling particularly playful tonight.

... I laugh at those who rant about freedom of speech on the internet... [insert laughing here]. It's even funnier when they [using sarcasim] tell moderators and admins at MB's that their Nazi's or whatever: I bet you wouldn't act like this IRL to a Cop.

A felony or a ban?
I think EVERYONE would act a bit different around a cop. And I'm gonna refrain from any further comments only because I'll just get yelled at more.

We do appreciate the suggestion, but now that I've had time to do some calculations, here's why it's not going to happen:
A full page with 15 average-sized posts takes up about 80K, plus another 20K for board images. This does not include any avatars, nor images added by users.
Not all users take up the full 6K for avatar size - if they did, however, and all fifteen posts were from different users, this could add another 90K to the size of the page. Taking the first page of this thread as an example of a more average thread, the avatars add 40K.
This comes to 140K, which is already quite painful for most dialup users, but there's not much that can be done to reduce it. We probably should not allow images in board signatures, but we're hesitant to limit this because of their popularity. Raising the avatar limit to 20K would bring the approximate maximum page size up to an incredible 400K, which is painful even on broadband.
Looking at the total number of avatar pictures downloaded this month, and assuming that only 15% of posters took advantage of the new 20K limit, this would also add $1.00 to our monthly bandwidth costs.

Yes you can - I just did, didn't I?Kama wrote:Heh, you can't relate Cops and Moderators.

A Moderator is like a Cop on the internet: They hold the same amount of power, per say.

Wha? Nazi moderators? The moderators here are nice.Kama wrote:the avatar limit isn't really a big deal. But nazi moderators are the worst. being unable to comply with the masses is how dictatorships and dry boards form.

Yes, they ARE like cops on the internet. And unless you've been hacking or cause financial problems [due to hacking, I'd guess] you're not going to get ARRESTED or charged with a felony.Rhyste wrote:A Moderator is like a Cop on the internet: They hold the same amount of power, per say.

I don't think that's exactly what Rhyste meant. What she meant is that we have the power to ensure that people follow the rules on a board that we are fortunate to have someone host for us. Take this in mind, that hosting a board like this is not cheap with the amount of bandwidth people cause on here. That's exactly why the The World forum went down like it did- Subaru could not afford the bandwidth it generated.Kama wrote:Yes, they ARE like cops on the internet. Perhaps you're saying that we are 'nazi-like' in status, but take in mind, this is private property, considering the situation. Someone here pays for it, you don't. You are at the good graces of the person who pays for this place.
We don't have the power to arrest someone or charge them with a felony, sure... But when you're on someone else's property in the real world, they have every right to have you forcibly removed should you not cooperate with them, which we have the right to do here.
That's when it gets to be this manner. I don't think we're so much like 'cops' as we are managers to help an owner of a piece of property. Like the movie theater I worked at, should someone get unruly, we told them to stop. Should they continue, we told them to leave. Should they not leave, we had them removed from the property.
In real life, that would be called 'tresspassing.' Here, that would be called a 'ban'. They're not that far apart.
However, when we say no on something, we mean it. We have the right to make the decision. We can consider the suggestion, but when it's something like upping the size of something as unnecessary as an avatar and such a big deal is made about it, we're definately going to say "No." If you don't like it, fine then. We aren't forcing you to stay here and participate.
...we could just disable avatars completely, because the important part of this board, is that we created it in hope to have some intelligent discussions on the .hack project.
....not arguments on whether or not the file size allowances of the avatars is big enough. u.u

You should quit before Rhyste verbally obliterates you, and she will. Believe me, I know the feeling. You are fighting a losing battle
