People are too lazy to spell or they have been using the computer for quite some time and making fun of the 'newbies' that usually use that horrible grammer. Well, that's what I think, at least.
It's like a slap to the face if used correctly in an arguement. A solid arguement can easily be canceled into a quick "plz shut up k thx." This is why it is popular on some boards.

Of course. I think it began in chat rooms- someone needed to get their insult or reply before someone else did. Shorter time, faster reply. That's just my theory.
