Most of Hayao Miyazaki's characters are drawn to look Japanese. Take Spirited Away, for example. Or Mononoke Hime. By drawing them to look Japanese, it establishes a cultural existence. SA and MH take place in Japan and reflect Japanese traditions, so the artform must do the same.

Art style adapts to the storyline/setting in most cases. And it's true that a good majority of anime does not have Japan as its setting. Take Gundam, for example. Occurs in outer space and in various locations on Earth. So the character designs depict a wide array of cultural differences.

That's the thing about inspiration, though. It can take things in completely different directions, for no good reason at all.

Pay no attention to that last post; I'm leaving this thread open because there hasn't been any other trouble, and that post needs to stay there for his ISP to see.

Japanese animation was influenced heavily by Betty Boop (as previously mentioned  ) and early Disney cartoons. I'm not sure about Mickey Mouse in particular, but films like Snow White were a source of inspiration for anime. "Big eyes, small mouth."

Although the animated characters usually appear otherwise, they're intended to represent Japanese people.

Bambi is a Disny movie but, how could anime be based off of a movie with no humans in it? Yes, there are creatures in anime but most of the time they're not real animals. Im not gonna be able to walk outside and find a flying hotsprings turtle. :D

In some anime some of the more ignorant and rude characters look more American because they are based off Americans. For a long time the Japanese people thought of Americans as mean ignorant people and therefore the charaters that weren't expected to be liked because of their attitueds ended up looking like Americans.
