The art style is better in the manga, for one.
Maybe the artists did it so kamui would look cool.. who knows?

..That's probably because you watch anime on TV. XD I don't trust anime on North American TV. They change like everything. I don't mean to go offtopic, so don't add onto this. >_>

No, it's always been there. Kamui was originally going to be male (in the early stages of planning the manga), and even then he had the eye. Just like Albireo has his unmatching eyes that are a symbol for his name.
