I haven't seen .hack//DUSK, yet, or had the chance to get a copy of the manga. But, please do keep in mind, that Shugo an Rena are twins. And twins do share a very close bond.

That's something else kinda weird ... half the sites out there are saying Shugo and Rena are twins, and the other half are saying one is older than the other. (Is confused) Somebody know the straight dope?

Rena just refers to shugo as her "Onii-chan" (big brother). they are twins.

Even if they are twins, one has to be born first, and thus, they would be the 'older' twin, even if it's only by a few minutes. Thus, this means that Shugo is a little bit older than Rena. Enough that it matters to her (and position in family is important in Japan)
