In Norse mythology it says that a magical sword wuz named Balmung. It's kinda funny really cuz this one god named Orin stuck Balmung in a tree and said whoever can pull it out will be successful in battle. 9 princes tried to pull it out but only the youngest wuz able to and his name wuz Sigmund (Siegfried). Recognize Sieg ? It's kinds like the sword in the stone type story.

yeah, this is all explained in the first ep. of liminality...
Only in dreams; We see what it means
Reach out our hands; Hold on to hers
But when we wake; It's all been erased
And so it seems; Only in dreams

Entries from Encyclopedia Mythica:

Balmung:

A magical sword, Balmung, was made by Wayland the Smith. Odin stabbed the Branstock tree, an oak tree in the Volsung palace, with Balmung. Odin then said that he who could pull the sword from the tree is destined to win in battle. Nine of the Volsung princes tried to take the sword, but only the youngest ever got it out. His name was Sigmund. Odin destroyed Balmung in battle but it was reassembled and Siegfried used it against Fafnir.

Sigmund:

Son of Volsung, to whom the great sword Gram went, Sigmund being the only person who could draw it from the log into which Odin had thrust it. After Sigmund died, he bequeathed the sword to his as yet unborn son, Sigurd.

Sigurd:

Sigurd (Siegfried) was the greatest hero in Germanic legend, and central character of the Saga of the Volsungs. He was the foster-son of Regin, who sent him to recover a fabulous hoard of gold. Regin's father Hreidmar had first acquired this treasure, which once belonged to the dwarf Andvari. To get their hands on the gold Regin and his brother Fafnir had then killed Hreidmar, but Fafnir wanted the treasure for himself and turned into a dragon to guard it.
Regin wished to possess the treasure which his brother guarded, and to this end forged a great sword for Sigurd, but it broke the first time it was tested, and Sigurd had his father's sword reassembled and re-forged, and Gram stood every test. By cunningly stabbing the monster from underneath, Sigurd succeeded in slaying Fafnir, thus gaining both wealth and wisdom (by licking the blood of the slain dragon), since Fafnir was said to have understood the language of birds. When he realized that Regin intended to kill him for the gold, Sigurd slew him before carrying it away himself.

Sigurd then went to free the Valkyrie maiden Brunhilde, who lay in a magical sleep, cast there by Odin, for daring to rise above his wishes. But Brunhilde had sworn only to marry the man who could ride through the fire that surrounded her dwelling. Gunnar wanted her, but could not perform the feat, but Sigurd in Gunnar's shape did so. Thus Brunhilde agreed to marry Gunnar.

Yeah, I think I do remember something about a sword named Siegfried. It seems that almost any Fantasy Anime/RPG Game has something about mythology in it.

Japanese anime, manga, and videogames have long drawn inspiration from ancient mythology. Norse, Judaic, etc.

You want viking god references, do you? Go watch Harlock Saga from Leiji Matsumoto. LOL

Kay, that was really off topic Mr. Spike-man. I think nearly all of the characters are named after something, even though it's not always obvious. I've come up with some:

Bear: obvious
Crim: short for crimson (duh)
Subaru: I haven't gotten that far in my Japanese yet...
Tsukasa: same here
Kite: obvious
Dark Rose: obvious
Elk: obvious
Mistral: there is a computer text called Mistral

I can't think of anymore names right now...
