What is Tsukasas weapon? and why did he reject the Mithril rod? was it because he didnt have a reason to? Also why does Tsukasa suck so bad in the series, near the beggining...
I don't recall what Tsukasa's weapon is in the game, or what it does. If I recall correctly, it's not that good of a weapon.
He rejected the mithril rod because he, apparently, liked whatever abilities were on his current weapon, even if it was low leveled.
He sucked in the beginning of the series because he's the main character and they needed him to grow throughout the series. It's a contrast thing, of course. Also, at that time, he was in a horrible fit of depression, and that tends to affect everything.

Actually. I beg to differ on Tsukasa's capabilities in the game.
1) I can understand his reasons for keeping a lower levelled weapon. I have a high level twin blade weapon for Kite in Mutation, but it doesn't do what I want it to, so... I keep one that's like... 3-4 levels lower.
2) Shall I point out to you that Tsukasa does defend himself for a decent amount of time against a Blade User (Ginkan). Following the tradition of MMORPGs, mages -suck- in hand to hand combat. Well, this is usual in MOST RPGs, actually. Especially in .hack- Mistral has the most pathetic attack power in the entire game that I've -ever- seen. Yet she's the same level as Kite. Her defense is pretty low too, which means that I tend to play the enemies so that they don't go after her when she's in my party.
Now, recall that in a hand to hand fight against a Blade User, a Wavemaster is doomed to be defeated. However, in most cases, a Wavemaster would probably fall in a hit or two. Tsukasa managed to defend the blows off pretty well, I'd say.
Second off. That was the dungeon for Θ Rejected Oblivious Wavemaster. This is a... what? level 37 or so earth field, I believe. Making through a dungeon like that alone...? ^___^ I'm quite amazed, because I remember it had monsters in it that I tend to get really annoyed with (I fought a room of two of those reviving things. I hate those. >.<;)
But when Tsukasa realizes that the game is now real for him... There's a new element in the game... That he can feel pain. Tsukasa isn't going to want to fight because of that. Thus after the fight with Ginkan, Tsukasa avoids combat consistantly... or tries to.
Because of Tsukasa being abused by his father in the real world, he has a serious aversion to pain, and tries to seek a comfortable life by avoiding it, thus avoiding conflict.
....and that is pretty much one of the roots of the problem for Tsukasa. ^__^

another reason that I found for tsukasa not wanting to fight (other people) was that he isn't really in a position to make enemies... he's stuck in the world 24/7 which means that he can always be sought out and attacked or whatnot... In addition, tsukasa does feel pain while another player he might be fighting against would just respawn and eventually kill tsukasa.

I'll say one thing about what Tsukasa posted, when I first saw the first episode of .hack//SIGN,I was amazed that Tsukasa could hold off a blade user in combat. It was really something new to me,and yeah,I'm used to the,"oh no!that wavemaster is doom! they dont know how to protect themselves without magic!" But it seemed to change this time, which I liked as well,I never knew Tsukasa learned how to defend himself like that.

Peh, it just plainly fits his character. He gave up the mithral rod out of courtesy and because the entire objective of the game isn't what he's concerned with. The staff he started out with probably has some sentimental value to it, if anything. He never put much trust into anything, so change isn't really his bag.

Actually, the weapons have some pretty weird names.
"Dogsun Sword" or something like that for BlackRose's strongest weapon in //Infection.
Also, Mireya [Mistral's character design in DUSK] uses an Electric Wand. My Elk PC uses it in //Infection.
