stupid question of the month 2! facial expressions
how do they show their facial expressions? since their visors only cover their eyes and it doesnt seem to be attacked or have anything to connect their facial muscles to the game? i mean to do what the characters in //sign do theyd have to have a full body interfaced suit. but they only got a visor and a PS controller basically...

They got added buttons on the controller to select what expression to use ^_^
Nah, I never really thought about it, but scienficially I'd have to say;
The face holds thousands of nerves that move to create our expressions, most that pass near the eyes. I'd say the visor has a sensors that sees these movements and calculates what full expression the user is using. Thus giving the user in the game, the expression that person is having IRL.

Its one or both of these theories....
1. If the visors have make some mental link with the player's mind, it could detect what expression they'd make and make the player's character do it.
2. The World has commands to do some things.. which may include facial expressions. (http://nmk.dragon-tear.net/misc/town2.html)

That, and don't forget, a lot of the emotions you see displayed in the show are implied. They might not really show much emotion, it might be more like in the games, but in //SIGN, you're seeing The World through Tsukasa's eyes, and so you see it in terms of real life.. with emotions, body language, etc.
Realistically, the game is probably a lot more stiff and less realistic, but if you've played an MMORPG before, you probably understand what it's like, even if the characters have no facial expressions, you understand how they're acting and feeling through their words and the way they move.

Ah, but .hack//Legend of the Twilight Bracelet, there's even _more_ emotions. (And noone trapped inside, yet.) And I'm talking manga, so in continuity.
There's just too many actions that are too individualized. For example, Mimiru's "resting her arms" with her broadsword behind her head thing, or Sora's "stand on Krim's spear" move.
Heck no that this stuff is done with the equivilent of a PS2 controller, I those are just red herrings. What's really happening is the neurogoggle's picking up the info.

You can get Data Drained into a coma in The World. I think it's safe to say facial expressions could be linked to your emotions.

I saw this on CSI, where the took a recording of someone's voice and could identify different stress levels. I wouldn't say it's impossible to calculate moods by analyzing voices. But then there is those expressions that don't have words with them.
Yeah, but it's just for the show. Not really implying that the game has really that much detail. But without it, it would be very bland and people would quickly lose interest, if they tried to mimic what real games look like from the inside.

Current motion-capture technology used for computer animation includes the use of special headsets with cameras that read facial movement. For example, if the cameras watching your eyes detect them to be closed, then the CG character's eyes close as a result. This technology is somewhat cumbersome in appearance, but perhaps it is improved and scaled down for The World?

" ::turns 90 degrees to the right:: Oh, nothing much really."
"Oh teehee hahaha ::blank stare:: You're too funny."
"Shut up, Mimiru. ::blank stare::"
o_O; Like typical games, y'know?
I mean, really, no offense to CyberConnect2, but the level of non-detailedness in the games really disappointed me after seeing .hack//SIGN. :\
But, hey, I guess you got what you got...

*shrug* Seriously, if the visor shows you a 3D gaming world, there could easily be a camera in the visor itself that reads your expression and paints it on your character. As for the body language, that can be assumed from the expression or preprogrammed by the person.
As for the fighting, the PS2 game is pretty lame in that department. Obviously, in The World shown in the anime, there is a jump button, which would explain Sora on Krim's spear. If only they'd have the intelligence to give us one in the games...

The whole camera thing feels like a big mess to me. I see people having to wear brightly colored paint on specific parts of there face so the camera see's it well. But the whole idea of an innovation is so that the thing does the work for you.
Keeping it simple. If you have to work in order to get some amount of detail, people won't bother much with it. Unless they're Otakus, who don't care much of what the look like IRL (face paint and all), or internet junkies for that matter. Not the sort of thing you'd want to encourage.
