Ok, from what I've seen this forum seems to be a serious forum dedicated to just plot and story dicussion of the .hack series. Which would mean that a .hack RP would not be wanted here... so I've decided to drop a link to the RP run by FireDragon1001 (from the .hack// Social Board) so that all of you people who want a .hack RP can go there, leaving this forum open for plot dicussion (this is not a bad thing )...
The backstory of the game... it takes place several years after .hack//Udeden
Back story: The world is still popular. However hackers now run rampant. They have hacked monsters to higher strengths, killing newbies. The hackers also bring monsters into the root towns, just to laugh as people run around and die slowly. The system administrators are left with only one option; trust the world in the hands of the players. The players, however, have to choose their skills. The system admins were incapable of giving them all the skills, for it would send the users into comas. These skills were quite varied. Gate hacking, hacking the enemies to weaker more suitable levels for fighting, transporting to newer areas yet to be released, hacking new items into the game, boost hackers, even unknown monsters that could be summoned.
But, in their time of attacks, they set their sites on a much larger target, Potions. These potions would often help newbies, and even if they had low health, they could still heal. The hackers chose to attack these potions. The potions started to disappear from the shops, the ones left over became higher in value. Soon, you were only able to carry 5 at a time thanks to the hackers, making Repths far more important then ever.
However, with the great power, came a choice. Abandon your older character and re-write his data? What type of crap was this? Why would you want to lose your character data? Sure, it can be restored, but why work on a character all over again? Because this is also a job. You are being PAID to do this. Both in game and in the real world. Some people have been offered extra stuff, once they finish, maybe it is the cure to comas that have occurred, maybe it is a job, and everyone has their own reason. That is how desperate the world has gotten.
However, in some ways, this made it worst than before, this was giving people who did not know how to hack the ability to hack. Some people went insane with such power, they thought, if hackers could hack the game, why can’t they? They now have the ability to do so, what’s to stop them? These types become a problem, almost as big as the main hackers. That makes two groups you have to worry about.
The problem can only get worst, as the hackers not only learn how to power up monsters, but they are learning how to change their data, into monsters that can be anything, have any strength, show no weakness, and take the form of a human player. These monsters grow in such power, that they are able to use the abilities of the players. They become known as the invincible monsters, for no one could figure out how to defeat them. Be weary of who you chose as an ally, for they could always wind up as one of the Invincible monsters.

Sort of... basically, we haven't had any mention of the AI's or any of the events that took place in the .hack series (yet). The only ties are the classes and items from the game series, and the fact that it takes place inside The World...
Actually, there has been some mention of Kite, and Balmung, and other famous figures, but so far they've just been cameo's. Mostly it's centered on the fight against an organized group of hackers which pretty much run The World.
"Hark he of Fair eyes, I am CRtwenty of the Azure Keyboard!"
Does it have to make sense? It gives us a good excuse to use hacking powers and fight in the RP. Though that does pose a good question, why would people continue playing The World if it got so bad... I'll have to get back to you on that.
"Hark he of Fair eyes, I am CRtwenty of the Azure Keyboard!"
Well, I'm all for that, but for me the background would have to make SOME kind of sense. I mean, what would you do if, in the RP, someone asks, "Why the hell is The World still running if all these hackers are ruining it?"
"A friend... or perhaps, a foe. A meddler with a warning." -Helba, .hack//Infection
This is just my opinion, but the way I see it, giving the players powers is CCorps final attempt to keep from destroying The World, instead of hiring a bunch of people to police the game and try and combat the hackers, they instead offer their aid to the people who are suffering the most, the players. If the players fail CCorp will have no choice but to end and redesign The World, costing them a lot of money, as well as a loss of consumer confidence.
And possibly one of the Wandering A.I.'s could be preventing them from deleting The World.

I don't mean delete. I mean take offline for a while. When an MMORPG needs an upgrade, it's taken offline for a little while, made available again when the upgrade is done. According to the games, The World has been upgraded in this way several times. Eliminating PKillings was one of these upgrades. I see no reason why, if hackers are as bad as this says, an upgrade could not be made to either deny them access or limit their access.

Well the hackers could simply deny them the access they need to do that. From what we've done so far in the RP the hackers have powers rivaling that of the sys admins, and even the programmers, by this point they have added so many things that The World is as much their own creation, as it is CCorps.
