Was that a summary of a random jumble of words that had sometime to vaguely do with the episode? And where is Andy's summary of Eve, anyway?

While that is true, it might be a good idea to pay attention to spelling and grammar. That way, we'll be able to understand what you said better.

(^^;; My usual access to cable is out, so I have a friend tape it. Takes me an extra day, though.)

In which the paths join.

Episode 23 - The Eve

Episode opens in the real world, with someone's computer terminal indicating mail.  A full ash tray is beside it, and we see a story script for "Annwn:  Gaiden" by Ryo Sakuma.

(Only person in the real world we've seen who smokes is Bear.)

The words "....it's here" are on the screen.

Then we see flashes of characters saying something to the screen.

Mimiru: (in Mac Anu, before the spinning Chaos Gate:  Who are you?

Subaru: (sitting in front of a Grunty)  Helba....

Crim: (running)  I would like to offer a strategic base

BT: (just killed some monsters, turns around)  Please come to 'Screaming WindSands The Castle of Fate'

Cut to Tsukasa.  The Secret Place looks old and dilapidated, covered with dust and cobwebs.  Looks like it's falling apart without the Voice or the Sleeping Girl there.

Tsukasa: <still in his daze>  Helba?....I don't know......

Sooo, what's going on here? Is Helba sending Tsukasa a message via a method she hopes will get his attention? (though the "who are you" from Mimiru is odd.) Is Tsukasa "psychically" picking up on the players he's interacted with before as they read _their_ invitations from Helba? Hmmm...... "psychic" messages have been seen in this series previously, though usually via Tsukasa and Subaru's special link.

At a glade at night, BT and Bear are having a discussion. Bear slightly surprised but pleasantly notes that BT's there. BT wonders if she should go back, leave the World again. Bear doesn't know what Helba's up to, but he's in this far. BT wonders if it's for Tsukasa, and Bear tells her at first, but now it's for himself. It's his burden. But it was BT who taught him to make his own meaning behind meetin people.

BT notes that she's not that deep, that she was just using Tsukasa, and probably still would. Well, Bear says, that's good enough. Wanna join the Party? It'll be the biggest event in The World ever!

BT is amused, as his talking reminds her of how she was almost "tricked" by Bear when they met offline. She thought he was.....never mind.

In a dark area ('Screaming WindSands The Castle of Fate' I presume) Mimiru runs across Sora, who was also invited by Helba. They verbally banter for a while between their two idealogies, Sora berating Mimiru for taking things in The World too seriously, Mimiru accusing him of taking nothing seriously. Ultimately, Sora says, nothing she says matters because he's stronger, and if she wants, he can prove it and he won't go easy on her this time :flourishes katars:

Subaru is praying, Western-Style at the altar inside the Church. Hmm...is Subaru Christian? I don't think I've ever seen anime Shinto/Buddhist characters pray with their fingers interlocked, on their knees like that. Usually hands are flat palm-to-palm. Subaru isn't someone who would RP religion. Another observation is that she _can't_ kneel in the real world, due to her condition.

Crim approaches, and Subaru gets up to face him. He notes due to the expression on her face, that Tsukasa hasn't been found. He cautions her from continuing on, because it will be dangerous from here on, not just her player, but her real life self. She doesn't care, however, as she has chosen to be involved in Tsukasa in all aspects. They step out onto the walkway outside the church, and one of those psychic fireflies is in the air nearby.

She ruely notes that she's been protected by so many people, and may have caused probelms, so she may not have the right to say she's "protecting" Tsukasa. Nevertheless, she wants to be by his side. , do what he does, spend time with him. She's even leveled up a bit, so she won't be in anyone's way.

The firefly lands on her arm, and she watches it for a while, then let's it go.

Crim notes thta Subaru is not only strong in levels, but has discovered her place and what she wants. Well, Crim says he may surprise her, but he's smart to, and has "business" to take care of, so will see her later. Subaru starts to thank him, but he says things are too early for that, and she's about to see what "The Red Lightning" can really do.

Back in the Secret Place, the deterioration continues, and the bed collapses. Tsukasa notes the firefly on his lap, and Maha watches from behind a tree, then leaves (did he lead this critter here?) the glowing insect flies into the air in front of Tsukasa's face, and then flies away. He follows it with his eyes till it's gone..his eyes have now focused, and he even tilts his head a little. Then he starts blinking.

:commercial:

Sora and Mimiru are still locked in combat, though it's obvious Sora's just amusing himself. Tiring of discussion, he forces Mimiru to yield, and holds his Katar at her, wondering now what?

Well, now it's time for a Deus Ex Machina in the form of Bear, to Mimiru's pleasure. And BT, to Mimiru's less than pleasure. Sora is amused they're working together, and BT replies that Sora is resposible for that.

Anyhoo, Bear tells Sora he can't afford this fight. Not because of 3-1, Sora's quite confident in that, but because their enemy is so strong. The term "_their_ enemy" amuses Sora and he repeats it dryly, and he leaves with his usual applomb. Mimiru picks up on the implication of _that_ rather quickly, and wonders if he has sided with the Enemy.

(I'm impressed. It's rare for characters in series to realize what someone is talking about when they emphaze "Oh right _our_ enemy" and evilly laugh. I wanted to smack the Fellowship of the Ring for not realizing that Boromir should of been watched more closely. Yes, there were uneasy glances, but they were idiots)

Back at the Church, Tsukasa warps in. Crim is releaved and runs up to him, touches his arm.

To which he freaks out. "NO! NO! NO! I'm sorry! I'm sorry! Don't do anything! Don't hurt me! Don't hit me!"

Tsukasa is hallucinating that Crim is his/her father. Crim starts to realize this. "I won't hurt you. Who..did this to you?"

Crim: I won't hurt you! Tsukasa: LIES! That's what you always say!

Sheese.

Crim comes to a rather controversial decision that some non-violent tough love is in order, and for Tsukasa to get out of this, he's going to have do it himself. He tells Tsukasa to stand tall and proud, like Subaru. At her name, Tsukasa starts realizing where he is. Crim says that Subaru would _never_ be afraid, and it's because of her Tsukasa had the strength to come here. Tsukasa says that he could never be strong like Subaru.

Crim tells Tsukasa something he's never told anyone about the real Subaru, how he first met Subaru. She used to have no idea how to play The World at all, but still played all day. He asked her why, and she told him simply because she wanted to. It was because for 4 years ago, an accident took away her ability to move, to run, or go anywhere on her own. She couldn't even be alone. Despite some people might think Subaru's decision to do these things in the World may be delusional, or self-deception, or just selfish, he would disagree with them all. Because Subaru _always_ takes responsibility for herself, and never runs away. (We see her joining up with Mimiru and crew.)

Subaru only mentioned this to him once, when she wasn't feeling well and had to back out of a promise in The World in order to go to the hospital. The only reason Crim knew more was his constant nagging her about it.

Crim asks Tsukasa not to run away. He's too involved in The World now, he's too involved with others, like Subaru or himself. He must grab hold of his own life, take responsibility, or nothing in The World (or any world) will ever change for him.

And with that, Crim tells Tsukasa that he's going ahead. His last words are that Subaru is waiting for Tsukasa.

We see a flashback of Tsukasa's past. She's older now. (the flashback is also the closest to full color I've seen, though still muted) We see Tsukasa seated at a table with a police officer. Apparently, she had stolen a toothbrush and bra. I doubt this was an bid for attention thing. She probably didn't have access to either, nor allowed money.

Suggesting dad both neglected her, and distanced her from her gender. (Maybe it's the classic "she reminded him of his mother" thing. Speaking of father dearest, he arrives at the police station in the memory, hauls back, and slaps her across the face. We see her eye in a close-up. I'm reminded of "the look" that Daniel Radcliffe, actor who plays Harry Potter in the movies, gave people. Gave me shudders.

So...Dad has

Physically abused Tsukasa
Treated her like a boy, refused to allow feminine products.
Killed the kitten that she was taking care of
Neglected her, didn't provide basic hygiene products.
Gone nuts (drunk?) and tried to kill her while she was in a coma.

Real gem, this one.

Back in The World, Sora is in The Dark Sanctum, pondering just how he can use this "Key of the Twilight" now that he's found it.

Krim meets up with Subaru and crew, _not_ telling them about Tsukasa. Who is the only member of the team that's not there. But Mimiru and Subaru agree that he will come. Someone warps in. Mimiru: Told you so! Oh wait...it's SilverKnight. For somereason, he was _also_ invited by Helba. But he's here, because he wants to protect Lady Subaru. Krim notes that good, they've got a reason, let's not get into any ballads here, he's welcome to join. Subaru's one condition is that Silverknight doesn't call her "Lady" anymore. Mimiru snipes that Silverknight shouldn't be too familiar either, to SilverKnights irritation.

The wind blows, and a green Helba Gate appears., like the one Bear, Mimiru and Subaru took to see The Broken Man the second time.

Crim mentions a line stated in a book he's read, a line to the hero Nashan. "If you desire to know the truth, you must then have the courage to accept it." It was from the book "Annwn" Bear gives an almost imperceptible start at this, and both BT and Silverknight comment that they've read it. About the hero who stepped out into another world. (Culture note. Annwn is the name of the Underworld in Welsh Mythology.)

They were once divided individuals, but together, they're a _Party._ Impressive music, posings, etc. All but Subaru and Krim leap into the Unknown gate. Back at the church, Tsukasa continues to wrestle with the enormity of his restored memories. Subaru tells Krim that she'll wait as long as she can. He smiles and tells her if she believes, then Tsukasa will come. He gets his chance to pose and warp into the green Helba Gate. And Subaru stands in wait, at the proverbial River Styx, for Tsukasa.

And her wait's gonna be two weeks long, because next week is a Kids Next Door marathon. We'll have to wait till the week _after_ for more .hack.

What does the suffix -chin mean? By Mimiru's comment, I assume it means between close family members or lovers.

The dubbing was fairly well done, though it still took some getting used to with the different voices. They seemed to draw out the sentences a bit, for some reason. Instead of, "Is that's so, what more is there to say?" they changed Crim to telling Ginkan not to have a long drawn out speech. I dunno, I think it sucked away some of the mood.

My fansub says "Don't call her Subaru-chin" as well, but I can't find any information on the suffix.

Perhaps the fansub is wrong, and what Mimiru said is "Don't call her Subaru-chan?"

"-chan" is what little kids call each other, teenage girls, and goopy lovers. It's the uber-informal, and I see Ginkan calling Subaru that when Hell freezes over. <g>

I've seen the whole .hack//sign series (sub) and I have no memory of the scene with tsukaka's dad. It seems that in the Americanized version of sign they have added a bunch of scenes to dumb it down. If you really want the full potential of this great anime series, watch it with subs. There are so many important things they have cut out.

Now these english voice overs. Bah! The only decent english voice over is maha.. wait he dosen't talk. nevermind..

Haha, the way you all criticized MasterMiaSage's summary was mean, although its understandable.
