At Katsucon, I bought myself some .hack//SIGN / The World cards because it's about as much as I could afford (since I'm poor or something like that o.-) Anyway. I got a very good pack (at least, in my opinion) including the #1 .hack//SIGN Tsukasa card, a Sora card (can't have too many of those ^o^) and a puchiguso card, and a Kite card.
However, it said, in English, 'Grunty' while the katakana beneath it say 'puchiguso'
So, obviously, this translation of 'puchiguso' to 'grunty' is not some random change the translators made, it was something planned from the beginning o.o 'puchiguso' might be a japanese word for the sound that a pig or big beast makes.
Another difference I noticed was in the .hack The World cards (a weapon card, specifically, the Wave Master weapon that Mireiyu and Mistral have) is that their weapon, aptly named in English 'Groovy Stick' (I love that name >D) is 'runrunsutekki) in Japanese o.o
I suppose, then, that the translations are done not by a hired company a la Konami, but internally, with both the English Versions taken into account when it was produced initially so things will be as close as possible, that is, having the english equivilents to the Japanese words from the start, instead of having to struggle to find fitting translations after it's produced in Japanese.
Puchiguso = Grunty: Why?
runrunsutekki? Is that a pun? ^^ (stick, suteki?)
Anyways, at first I was upset over the name, but yeah, I saw that when Tsukasa pointed it out to me too. I suppose it's not as bad a name as it could be anyways, and besides, how do I know that the name Puchiguso doesn't sound stupid to a Japanese person. ^_^;
I was also worried how they would sound in english... I ended up falling over with laughter when I finally got to hear one. XD

Durhi - Retarded puchiguso
Hee... If this is the subject of this discussion, I'll at least post this for those who've not seen it. This is from the CC official site in the 'Oshiete Piroshi-san' section- an English letter got sent to them about Puchigusos. n.n

Hi !
I'm a .hack fan from America.
Sorry to trouble you, but I would like to know where the name "puchiguso" comes from.
Thanks,

"The World," is created by the development team of CC Corporation, and one of the folklore in that world is the "Hebiguso God," who is one of the gods. People worship the Hebiguso God and take care the creatures called "puchiguso" as the messenger of Hebiguso God. The name comes from "puchi = small" and "guso = Hebiguso."
Oh, what a joyous occasion!
Piros the Silver White is here!
May the stars shine until the end of your journey!

There we go. n.n That will at least help with the 'puchiguso' part. Although, Im not sure 'bout the grunty bit. Perhaps it's the 'buhi' sound is a bit of a grunt... And they're calling them someth off of that.... o.o
