Sorry if this sounds harsh, but:
Advertisements of items or services for sale that are not .hack-related are not permitted on the boards, and are only allowable in PM if specifically requested by the recipient.
Any ads must first be run by a moderator for approval.
Violation of either of these will result in a warning, and a ban on the second offense. PMing any advertisement of any kind without prior approval from the recipient will result in a ban. I do have ways to verify that a complaint about PM advertising is not false.

And a clarification...
I consider "items or services for sale" to include most anything that makes money, or has a potential to. Thus, if your site has banner ads on it that make you money, it's borderline (not to mention a violation of fansite etiquette). But more importantly:
This post is meant specifically to address sites that offer prizes and/or increased status to those users who get other people to visit the site using a personalized link. We've already had two people post links to such sites. I don't object to the sites themselves, of course, but they are both completely off-topic for this board and against this policy. If I see more such links, I will start banning without warning, unless I'm in an exceptionally good mood.
