Well... to explain that is pretty much explaining the entire plotline of the .hack series...

[spoiler]Basically she's the first (or third if you count Lycoris and Morganna) in a series of A.I.'s who will force the Online World to evolve, causing the real world to evolve as well to keep up with it. As part of the Liminality plan...[/spoiler]

x.X heh... That annoyed me... They hardly explain anything in the anime(s)... Well, enough to know what's going on. You have to play the games to get pretty much everything c_c

so are you saying there is not much to learn for the show but more to learn for the game? but in th show they explain some to keep you with them.

Yeah. Like in SIGN, they never really explain Aura's purpose, or Morganna's purpose, or what the heck an AI Harold was doing in that one dungeon, or why they're there in the first place, and yet those three elements and maybe one or two more things make what .hack is. By the time I finished watching SIGN (before the games came out or it aired on TV), I was kinda dissapointed since I was just as lost from when I started watching it... c_c;;

Yea, the games are the main part of the .hack series, everything else is just there to explain plot holes, or to elaborate on certain parts. (Mia wouldn't be half as interesting a character if it weren't for //SIGN).
