Story Over Action in .hack//SIGN
.hack//SIGN has quickly become one of my all-time favorite series. Now I don't expect many people here to dislike the series, considering the nature of this board. Yet, I would still like to ask for an opinion on this matter. One of the things that I have seen people complain about is that the series is very dialogue heavy and that it has a general lack of action. I found this to be very admirable decision by the creators and the series' attention to story and character development is one of the factors that I like the most about it. Now, tell me, did you find the lack of action sequences and emphasis on plot to be a detriment to the series?

Some possible symbolism in the coloring design for Tsukasa. Everything about The World is vibrant and colorful while Tsukasa is not. Just another way in which he is different from the rest.

Yay for intelligent discussion!
.hack//SIGN reminds me a lot of a movie called Waking Life - anyone seen it? Basically, a guy wanders through a perhaps unreal landscape talking to people about philosophy. What makes it all "click" with me is the insane and beautiful animation, and IMHO .hack//SIGN works for a lot of the same reasons. Yes, it's talky, but that's because it has a lot to say. The series would have been *terrible* if it was just people fighting and grunting things about "honour" and "truth" like some *other* anime.

Oh Geez... This sounds like something that the guys at school mentioned a while back... And I won the discussion
.
Well, I think that Bee Train and the others all realized that an anime like this was needed. Sure, the follow up of //Dusk (Not including Liminality) wasn't as serious, but... A mostly serious anime with a mix of comedy and action was required to "stabilize," if you will follow me here, the anime world in .hack, if not the world as a whole.
My point is this-- .hack has something for everyone.
Do you collect things? .hack//ENEMY is a perfect hobby.
Do you like {insert music type here} kind of music? .hack//SIGN soundtrack has, I guarantee you.
Do you like addictive RPG's? .hack//Infection, Mutation, Outbreak, and Quarantine.
It's things like that. It has something for everyone, and, though it is NOT the favorite thing for everyone, people like me love .hack//SIGN for reasons... okay, I'll end here.
I hope you understand.

Well I like Rock music, and I didnt hear any of it in there, although,I'm not complaining, hell I have most of the OSTs from SIGN ;Pichi wrote: Do you like {insert music type here} kind of music? .hack//SIGN soundtrack has, I guarantee you.
I liked SIGN for it being different from those other animes, instead of action, its more dialouge.I will admit that when I first started watching SIGN I was bored, yet I still continued watching the series just to see how it ended or how Tsukasa was going to stay in The World forever or not.
After a while, you start to notice the changes and the development the story as you are drawing near the end.Even with the ending..it wasnt even an ending,it was a beginning of an end.
I like rock too, they really should've put some rock music in there... Oh well, guess I shouldn't be to picky... the music was one of the things that kept me hooked, But the story was just great. The characters conflict and all that jazz, Its great. There have only been a few movies and shows that have made me actually care about what happens to the characters. .hack//Sign was one of them.
Lycoris: What is the name of your spear?
Alberio: It is the Divine Spear of Wotan.
Lycoris: It is a Spear of God.
Alberio: That's right.

Well, I had gone from an avid DBZ fan straight to .hack, so of course I was just a little dissapointed with the lack of action, but not too much ^_^
If anything, it was the deep plot and the heavy characterization that attracted me to SIGN (and the music, and the sweet animation...). An anime like SIGN is something I've never really seen before, watching things like Digimon, and as mentioned, DBZ in the past. Though, usually people like me would turn away from an anime like SIGN, so I guess it was my new interest in video games that made me stick to it as well.
Though, it makes me wonder how they're all in a world where fighting is the key to getting stronger, and they barely do that... but I guess when you're trying to figure out what's corrupting an innocent player and the game as well, conquering dungeons isn't exactly number one on the to-do list.

Eh yeah, there are different types of rock..I cant even figure out some of the types other bands play x_X; I just say,its rock music o.o;ichi wrote:I beg to differ about the rock. Although it is sometimes hard to recognize, quite a few of the songs are experimental rock, at least... does that count?
To me,long as I hear yelling, screaming, with a bunch of death threating words, with some electric guitars and drums beating..its rock to me :/
Pretty much the SIGN music did have techno music, also sweet melody songs, and so on.So..it's basically world music? Since it has a bit of everything As stated from before.
