Maybe this should be in spoliers, but in refernce to episode one in the very begining the Black towers with the fuzzy reception:
What are they?
What feld are they in?
Do they have a purpose?

I thought they were the eyes of Morganna or the Prototype of her lost somewhere watching everything we see

that's acutally a cell phone monolith-thingie. We're not quite sure what it does.

It looks like it's in a Net Slum... I wondered about it for a while, and I would think that would be the only place for such a thing. Wonder if it gets good reception...

They possibly could be a reference to 2001: A Space Odyssey. [spoiler]The monoliths in 2001: seem to cause evolution, since "The World" is basically Harold's attempt at evolution I think its a sound theory. But who really know's? It's just another one of those .hack mysteries... the series is full of 'em.[/spoiler]

) but it does have quite a few allusions to other things as well (i.e. Balmnug, Sieg- opera; the quote from .hack//SIGN "The Eve"- Annwyn; et cetera) so there is a good possibility.
