How do i get my own IRC server?
How do i get my own IRC server?
As the question states above i would like to know how i can get an irc server.
You'll need:
- A computer or account at a provider that will permit you to run an IRC server.
- Some sort of UNIX-based operating system (e.g. Linux or FreeBSD).
- IRC server software (I use DALnet's IRC server, with Epona for NickServ, etc.).
- Enough experience to keep the server, OS, and IRCd (IRC server) running, stable, and secure.
There are a number of companies who will take care of all of this for you, for a price. (I work for one of them.) It can be difficult to find a provider that allows IRC, since it's a service that tends to get abused and attacked unusually often. It's very difficult to get a server linked to a major network, such as DALnet or Undernet, since those servers and their providers are almost always the target of massive flooding attacks.
