Hmm... It seems like they recently did release a PS2 head-tracking headset to the Japanese market:
Has anyone stopped to think about the effects a headset would have on society, especially gamers, but other people in general?
I'm pretty sure all of us in here can say that they get pretty obsessed with things, but to take it to another level and completely tranfser your sense of reality into a virtual world? AWESOME! but, some can hardly keep a line between fantasy and reality normally.
I really do fear for 'The World' if something were to happen. Granted this is all spectulation, but the American press can get pretty jumpy.
It was amusing... I was commenting in my LJ sometime ago about the worm virus attack that got a large portion of the east Asia and the West Coast sometime ago. I was saying that if something like the Deadly Flash showed up in the next year or so, I'm probably yanking all but one of my comps from my network. u.u;;
It's really creepy, though because all these things are just... Speculation, right? But when you think about it... I don't know 'bout the metaphysical aspects, but... most of the technological aspects seem highly plausible.
I think it was said that the A Tone is the start of everything for the coma victims, that it triggers something with the pituitary gland... or -something- like that. I'm not sure what off the top of my head, but... It's the idea that it's triggering someth akin to an epleptic attack. We already know that images can do that. I was working on a computer with a bad refresh rate a week ago in school. That gave me the worst headache imaginable. It's little things like that, but more on a subliminal level. People say subliminal things such as that are possible. Nothing outright obvious, but.. the color of a room to effect the baby's moods... the music played through a shopping center to make you want to buy more... Those things.
It's all about taking advantage of those weaknesses. Which scares me. A lot. @.@;;

And I know the moment that you find it safe to wear that headset though, I'll never be able to get you away from it. You're bad enough with your other video games, ne? J/K!
Scariness aside though, it would be really neat to use a headset like that. But I wonder, since I've never used one, just how well they can emulate a 3D enviroment? I'd really like to get an idea of how good it works before I shell out all my cash for one. x.x
All I can say is "The World" Would make addiction to Evercrack seem like nothing at all. I think there would be a lot of problem. Heck I know I'd be one of the ones at risk to get sucked in... Anyhow still I'd love to try something like that at least once! Also I'm already hooked on PSO as it is. If it was VR ... I doubt I'd get out much. XD

The closest thing I've seen to headtracking headsets is that silly beachhead game out there, which isn't really VR. It annoys me to no end. Police 911 is more VR than it. However... I've also seen games that prove that you don't -really- need to have a headset to be able to simulate virtual reality in some form or another.
R-360 is one of them. This is a game I've not seen in -years-. Sega developed it like when I was in 1990 or so. Do any of you remember the game they developed called Afterburner? This is where the cockpit would move and swerve as you did while piloting the plane. I had it on the Sega when it was released to console, but it was never as cool...
....but I digress... R-360 was an upgrade of the Afterburner systems. In the game, you got 2 minutes to fly a fighter jet through enemy airfield. You could flip the plane, do loops, tricks, everything... and what was so cool about the game, the 'cockpit' would do -everything- you did. If you did a forward loop by pulling the stick back and holding it, the cockpit would rotate around at the same rate you're moving at. Same with flips, it would flip you over too. I actually got into a minor dogfight with my plane upside down once. XD That was highly amusing.
However... This game didn't have very advanced graphics. It was on the same level as Afterburner... but it's realism still astounds me by no ends.
Another game that's a good example of this... is the infamous Virtual World Battletech system. If you find battletech pods nearby, you should give them a shot because they may not be there for long. They're nowhere near like the R-360, but you're in a full mecha's cockpit. Everything in the cockpit has a function if you go into advanced mode. There are foot pedals. Sticks on the left and right of you. Switches above you, besides you, in front of you... EVERYWHERE. That's a setup realism... And that was pretty amazing as well. Nowhere near as awesome as R-360.
Then the Virtual Boy that Nintendo released. It's not the best example, but if you want a good idea of what headset VR can possibly be like, that may be a better example than you imagine. I've played Wipeout SX (the one before 3. I can't remember it's name) on a headset. That was -weird-, but it wasn't a real headtracking headset. This is a new thing. I've not seen on a headset.... but I've not been looking actively for headsets. It's a neat concept to see it out though.

im writing this as i read the diferent posts so that i might reply to them all before i get distracted and only reply to the last one in the thread.
i think i know how it will work, you just out on the goggles and it will show each eye the sam image slightly out of sink with each otehr and our eyes will have to put them together it will give the ilusion of 3d. however i would only recomend this to people who like to play .hack in the first person view. if you only plan to play in the zoomed out view you wont benifit as much.
alot of things that happend IRL happen first in fiction. most plains, WW2, and such. so if we see it in the media i personly think its has a good chance of happening
now for my own addition to the thread, i think that that game was probubly writen with the idea in the back of the programers head that the head set might be made, and they programed acordingly. im not sure how well it would work on other games. but i do think that if the head set sells really well more games will be made head set compatible. however remember those vests that viberated in the same spot your little fighting man got hit? well if you dont then that cuzz they were around for like 5 min, they were never widly use though it was origenaly thought that they added to the reality of the game. and only one or two games was ever made compatible for it so it eventualy bacame another thing people throw in the back of the closet untill the upgrade their game system then solf to funkoland.
any way it is now time for me to start playing the game agian, i curently have 2 games in my posetion and none of them are mine <i am the king moocher>
There's a major difference between these headsets and the ones in .hack. These track head movement, so you look around and the image inside moves. However, the ones in .hack seem to be without that feature. It simply has the twin viewers and earphones, and it doesn't do anything if you turn your head (apparently, at least. I never see anyone playing doing anything but staring straight ahead of themselves.)
