Thing is, when you get nothing but compliments about your art, you're never going to feel the need to improve. The occasional "yeah, this looks cool!" is okay, but if that's all you receive, it just becomes shallow.

MahoNPC, Pin is offering a simple critique of your art, which any artist should be grateful for. He does it to my stuff too, and I note it and change it in future drawings. A critique is an important tool to an artist.

He's not making fun of it, either, nothing he said was ill spirited. If it was, I would have already said something about it to him.

If you post your art publicly, expect to get comments and criticism. Criticism, if effective, is a good thing. Pin's critique was accurate. This isn't to say that the art isn't good, but any artist has room to improve, and that is why we tend to ask for critiques so we know -how-. No artist should be completely satisfied with their work. If they are, they will never improve.

If you only want compliments and don't want critiques, please state so in the original post. But if you say nothing, it's free game for anyone on this board to say what they want. Please keep this in mind.

Here's the thing.

If your artwork is posted for the viewing of an audience, you must expect to get feedback from it. I can't see why else you would do it. If you draw just to draw, then why show it to other people? Not everyone is going to like what you draw, and not everyone is going to keep from saying it.

It has taken me years to be able to realize this as well. Nobody LIKES hearing that something they've done is imperfect or needs improvement, of course not. However, if art is something you really love and want to get better at, one needs to swallow their pride and accept public criticism, as it is, as I've said, an extremely useful tool. If you are doing art for an audience, which we assume you are by posting your art to a public forum, then you need to get feedback from that audience to see if what you've done has communicated what you wanted to communicate.

Art is a form of communication. Don't forget this.

As has been seen here, what you meant to communicate in this image could not be understood by Pin. You said it yourself.
first off, shes in a trance,is there something wrong with that? She's an empty soul,if you actually knew what I was going for, then maybe you'd understand.
Yes, but you shouldn't have to explain it in words. If he doesn't understand it from the get go, then you need to work on expressing it in more obvious terms. That's why criticism from a random person helps. Of course -you- know what you were drawing in the picture, but if nobody else does, how is it communication?
Sora..it doesn't ehlp me if people are pointing out the flaws on my drawing..it gets me angry.I draw what I draw, and nobody should have a problem. So what if its plain?Nobody said I was perfect..
First of all, the only one having a problem was you, who threw a fit because Pin offered a useful critique. It's not our problem that you are unable to take criticism, that's something you need to deal with.

And of course nobody said you were perfect. Art is imperfection. It's a representation of something, but is not the true thing. That is why artists can improve their entire lives. Nobody can reach true perfection in art because it is impossible, but it is the striving to reach it that leads to improvement.

If I need to make this a rule on this forum, I will, but I figured it was common sense for people to understand that if you post art to a public forum, it's free game for anyone to say anything they want about it. Now, some things aren't appropriate and will be dealt with should they happen to be said, but anyone may critique a posted image.

You may specify that you do not want a critique in your original post, but I'm not keen on having a thread full of 'Oh, that's cool' 'great job!' 'So neat!' in this forum. It's useless and takes up space and I, personally, am tired of hearing it. In my art classes, we weren't allowed to say things like 'I like it' or 'it's cool' or 'that's neat', because it did not help the artist one bit. Art is not an ego thing. It's a skill thing, it's an emotion thing, it should NEVER be an ego thing. The best artists I know are extremely humble and don't like their work because they know they can improve, and knowing this gives them the drive to do just that.

So. You're welcome to share your art here, but either learn to steel yourself and take criticism, or don't bother.

Pin, I appreciate your willingness to censor your opinion in this case, that's an effective action and I appreciate it.

In my opinion, however, you shouldn't -have- to. But do as you will.

Excuse me for taking this so seriously, too, but for the sake of avoiding conflict, don't blatantly put yourself in a situation where you are incapable of taking criticism well. Either put a warning that you don't want criticism in your post, or don't post anything.

Well said Sora, well said indeed.

While angels sing, in endless dark. The dead seek out sin."
