Morganna and the Cursed Wave

Post by Zelyhon »

Hello all on this board. I'm a new user who recently finished the .hack//sign series and came across your board. As I would like some discussion of the .hack series, along with the interpretations of others, I joined. Anyways, that'll do for an intro. Onto the question.

Before watching the anime, I had played all four games (infection, mutation, outbreak, and Quarantine, as I'm sure you know. I'm just saying that in case there are more out there I'm not aware of besides G.U.) and thus, when Skeith showed up at the end of Sign, I recognized him. However, that got me thinking about the games and how they interact with what I learned from the anime. I'm curious as to what exactly Morganna's relation to the Cursed Wave is. For that matter, I'm a little unsure as to the origins of the Wave. I know it's attacking Aura for the same reasons as Morganna (or at least, I think I know. I thought that it was to destroy Aura and thus corrupt the world, but if I'm wrong about that, correction would be appreciated). Any and all answers are appreciated. Thank you.

In a nutshell, the Cursed Wave is Morganna. That name is just given from the Epitapth. Morganna as she put it herself at the end of .hack//SIGN, "I am The World". And the Cursed Wave are the 8 Phases who Kite stopped in the games. They are apart of The World, they are Morganna herself in visual form (odditiy with Maha however). When Kite defeated all the phases, he also removed Morganna making 100% room in The World for the Ultimate AI known as Aura.

Thanks. I wasn't exactly sure what the two were. They're one and the same then? How exactly did they come about? Were they a mistake from an older version of the world that's trying to get rid of Aura to assert its own dominance or something else?

The basis of the game is based off the deceased Emma's Epitaph more commonly known as "The Epitapth of Twilight". The Cursed Wave aka Phases are indirectly mentioned into the poem along with mentioning of other familar characters.
Yet to return, the shadowed one
who quests for the Twilight Dragon
rumbles the dark hearth
And Helba, Queen of the Dark, has raised finally her army
Apeiron, King of Light, beckons...
At the base of the rainbow doth they meet.
Against the abomniable "wave" together they fight.
Alba's lake boils
Light's great tree doth fall
Power - all now to droplets turned in the temple of Arche Koeln
Returns to nothing, this world of shadowless ones.
Never to return, the shadowed one,
who quests for the Twilight Dragon.
The wife buffeted by "waves" turns her back on the field.
The daughter that waited for the shadows repeated,
"For sure... For sure I can go home."
But the girl did not know...
The truth that waited at the end of the journey
The eternal mourning of her land.
In the place of the calamitous, only life was known.
After the circling stars
When the eastern dark void, the air full of despair
In the depths of the divided forest, in the land of Karma,
Riding fast on the path is Skeith
Bearing death's shadow, it eliminates all that seek to thawart it.
The Confusing Mirage, Innis
Decieves those that see it with illusions, rescues the waves
The wave soaring high, when its head is smashed,
A new wave will emerge
To become Magus's power.
When questioning the wave,
hope's light will be lost when he speaks of the
dark future of where sorrow and resignation reign.
Using Fiddlehiem's Technique
When englufed by the Waves of Calamity, Gole will plan
The sweet snare of conciliation is Maha
The Waves, an exceeding maelstrom
Nothing can escape
When you think you have escaped, Talvos exists
To destroy those with his exceeding cruelty
Upon violent requital, only to remain is the void, the vacant darkness
is the harbringer that Copernic is to appear.
And as I stated before, Morganna reveals herself as being The World itself in episode 26 of .hack//SIGN when Tsukasa, Subaru, and Mimiru found Aura. And them themselves the Phases were no mistake, as said before this whole game was created in poetry and the characters were always there intentionally. And their purposes are absolute but never full filled because Morganna attempts to destroy Aura which meant she misused their original intentions and used them for her own purposes as they being her herself. All this was caused by her finding out what death means and knowning too much of it because Player Killing was never introduced to her.

So incidently, you could say all (majority) of the complications of .hack exists because of a computers incapability of knowning what death means. (Morganna & Mourti).

Anyways the last DVD came with useful extras displaying official information, and here's some screenshots of it related to what I just discussed.

Okay. I was just having a bit of trouble understanding what caused Morganna to begin to act how she did. I understood somewhat that she was the world (Y'know, since she flat out says it), but didn't know what was the initial cause of hter malfunctions. I appreciate you explaining this to me. And by the last DVD, did you mean the last DVD of the anime series or of the game or of something else.

Who is Mourti? You mentioned him, but I don't recall any mention of him.

Hmmm...I wonder how G.U.'s going to work with Morganna's reaction to PKing...

Morganna's life ending the moment you finally defeated Corbinek, therefore she no longer exists and now Aura is the dominant AI system of The World. There won't be any more encounters of Morganna in future series, or at least it wouldn't make sense. She didn't exist in .hack//Legend of the Twilight (Anime or Manga universe) either, thus further proving her destruction was valid.

Anyways, Mourti was a wandering AI much like Zefie, Lyricos, and Aura. She was however created with left over data found by 4 hackers who each felt they had complete control over which of course only 1 truly controlled her because of quest to know what death was. Anyways Mourti only existed in the (Anime Universe) of .hack//Legend of the Twilight. For those that read the (Manga Universe), she wasn't included in the series but rather Zefie was only for the manga.

And here's a picture of Mourti.

I see. I wonder, then, what the main conflict is going to be in G.U. without Morganna around. From what I've seen in the trailer, it's obvious something's wrong, but I don't know what. Ah well. Guess I'll just have to wait it out.

Also, this may not be the proper place to ask this, but while I have someone I'm talking to, let me ask you, have ZERO, intermezzo, Another Birth, or Unison come out here, and if so, from whom and where? I saw AI busters the other day at Barnes and Noble, but haven't seen anything of the other two books, nor have I been able to find Intermezzo or Unison.

Intermezzo and Unison can be found on the limited edition of the .hack//SIGN DVD's. However Another Birth and ZERO have yet to be translated and imported.

It's quite simple... The Phases have awoken on themselves. It's quite obvious from the battles with them that the Phases have limited AI on their own, even with Morganna controlling them. (You're telling me Morganna had split personalities when she controlled Gorre? Right...) And data never disappears.

Tri-Edge? Just look at Cubia's core when you're fighting him. It's clearest in the later parts of the game though. What am I talking about? It's a dark figure of a Kite copy in a fetal position within the core.

Just play at Cubia's first fight in Quarantine. You simply cannot miss it if you look at the Core. While it was blurry before, I think it darkened considerably during Quarantine. The second fight may be a little harder to see considering the core seems to go off-screen alot...

I'd provide screens but I don't know anywhere that has screens of Cubia's core up close...

Within the DVD Extras, they did state that Cubia copied Kite's data continously in order to keep up with his abilities and level.

Also note that Cubia has Sora inside of him.

Sora? I don't see anything resembling Sora in him... And that definitely don't make sense. If Sora was in Cubia, how did he go meet Kite?

Do notice that the information on the Liminalities extras were made by the translating party before .hack//ENCYCLOPEDIA and suchwise were released... >_> There are a lot of errors, especially the information going against what Aura -explicitly- stated about Cubia. If the Liminality extras were to be believed, then Aura didn't know a thing about Cubia when she said all those things. Aura certainly had better knowledge of Cubia than what was stated in the Liminality extras, since Cubia really didn't run when she predicted it wouldn't...

Because after you defeat Cubia, Sora is finally freed from his comatose state caused by Skeith. Since it was Skeith who datadrained Sora and absorbed his conscious into his form and then was passed onto Cubia during Cubia's awakening.

But who's to say .hack//Encyclopedia is incorrect and Liminality is right? I can understand you saying ENC is correct and LIM is wrong, but what about vice verca? All we're going off of is people's words, have you yourself compared the two statements between the two published materials? Were you or I the one that published those contents? The only real answers are within those of the developers, neither the two materials released.

Well, regardless, Cubia was still intact when Sora met Kite. During Outbreak, that is. Sora was apparently trapped in Skeith's wand according to popular theories, which I can't say doesn't fit the description of his plight: Wandering around as a consciousness within a red staff.

And I didn't necessarily meant .hack//Encyclopedia, there was also .hack//ANALYSIS and all, some which came from CC2 I believe. Still, I get what you're getting at.

Anyway, I still have to say, the figure in Cubia's core couldn't be Sora... it's too short. And not lanky like Sora. It's more of Kite's height and everything.
