I'm impressed by your DNAcentrocism, Xebexz. If you think the AIs are *just machines,* with no ability to feel, than why should you even care about what happens to Maha? The whole point of the character is that she *is* more than just an line of code, she's a person. Remember, the whole thing about how she slowly became closer to Tsukasa and decided that what Morgana was doing to him/her was wrong? Morality is a *human* response.

I didn't get attached to Maha because of her ways at the begnning, I have trouble changing my opinons on someone/something once I have set them, it's the flaw in my character. =/
If I really took time to think it over, I coudl care for Maha. I do, but it's just my number emotionally thought at the moment. Sorry if I avoided the point of the situation. ^^

The ability to feel pain is part of your brain. If AI is truely artifical intelligence, the only difference is that their brain is created through electronics and therefore not biological. It doesn't have anything to do with it's ability to feel pain.
"A friend... or perhaps, a foe. A meddler with a warning." -Helba, .hack//Infection
That depends on your definition of a soul, Rhyste, but I don't think this is necessarily the place to get into that.
I'm of the opinion that an AI can feel 'pain', though not necessarily in the same way that we do. Pain is, of course, a signal to the brain that something is NOT RIGHT in the body. If something is NOT RIGHT with a program's code or something like that, then I would assume there would be some equivilent. They may not be as sensitive as humans, but I'm sure that enough of a change in their code could be considered painful.
It really all depends on how 'human' these AI were made to be. If they were made to have only a form of 'intellegence', they may not have a sense of pain, just as they may not have a sense of right or wrong, or any sort of 'feelings' at all. But AI in .hack seem to be the kind who have likes, dislikes, hopes, dreams, and all of the things that make someone 'real'. The fact that these AI change and learn indicates that there is some emotional factor that triggers these changes. Something that is based on intellegence alone lacks the entirety of a thought process, and thus, would not be able to change or have the will to grow, or in that right, have any will of its own at all.

Sora, I'm going to have to give you a warning. No one-sentence replies that are not on topic!

No, Maha is an AI, and this is proven, so that's factual information ^^;
Because Maha is Mia, and Mia is the 6th Phase, this automatically makes her/him/it an AI. A Phase is a part of Morganna, and Morganna is a program, so.. yeah.
