I will go insane if anybody else refers to Maha as *it!* Repeat this relaxing mantra: Maha = "she" ... Maha = "she" ... Maha = "she" ... ad nauseum.

Well, Maha does look rather boyish in SIGN. And you never hear a voice in SIGN either, to help choose... and why the heck is that? How come Tsukasa can hear a voice but no one else (IE, us) can't? I feel jipped.

Eheh,let's not start with the "Maha's gender is ____ !!" type of thing again -_-;

I too believe that Maha is a she,but seeing as it's an A.I. or rather asexual,it doesnt really matter :/

Maha = AI

AI = program

program = "it"

To feel pain, one must have sensors that inform you of physical damage. I'm not taking about EMOTIONAL pain, because that's quite different. Now, the human brain feels no physical sensations of its own, meaning if someone were to poke your brain with a spork, you would not feel it.

AIs in .hack may have a self-diagnosis program that lets them know when they are in danger/etc, but what purpose would "feeling pain" serve in their form of existence?

When did she react to pain?

Do you feel pain when you play videogames? I don't.

Now she has a soul? Wow.

Since when does gender depend on gonads? Never - about as long as sentient thought has depended on a physical brain. It's all just a matter of personal identity. If Mia = Maha and Mia wants to be thought of as female, then why shouldn't we all use "she/her" in regard to them?
(For the same reason I feel that Tsukasa should be referred to as "he/him" until he gets his memories back in episode 24 and identifies as female again ... but that's a topic for another time.)
More to the point, we're all talking about an *RPG.* People can choose their own identities. It would be considered impolite at best and (extremely offensive at worst) to call a female PC "he" just because the human behind the character is male.
Finally, *it* has all kinds of negative connotations in English, including the idea of ownership and being an object - inanimate and meaningless. (Gets off soapbox.)

Tsukasa feels pain. I see no reason why Maha would not as well. In any case, it is obvious by the expressions on her face that she does.

Maha never has a really definite gender. As Maha, the character model is a boy.

As Mia, the character model is a girl, but his voice is somewhat deep for a girl, and he refers to himself in a more boyish term. He says 'boku', which yes, can be used for a girl, but tends to be for the tomboyish ones who are trying to seem more masculine.

The gender issue is so ambiguous that it doesn't really matter if you call Maha/Mia he, she, or it. Language conotations aside, Cobweb, I think most of us understand what the other means if we say 'it' instead of he or she. Maha/Mia won't get offended, he isn't real.

And, if you've noticed, I switch gender in mid paragraph in reference to Maha/Mia, so as long as we're all communicating on the same level, I don't think it's a real issue. So don't start telling us how we have to refer to Maha/Mia, because in the end, it's our choice, and you will simply have to live with it.

Yeah, that's true. I'm just upset because I like Maha, and it seems like no one else does because s/he can't talk. There ain't no justice.
(Segues unobservably away from shame) Does anybody know *why* she can't talk? Or at least, why only Tsukasa can hear him/her? I think it's supposed to represent that Maha is a part of Morgana and thus not "whole" ... after his/her rebellion Maha becomes Mia, who *can* talk.

Eh...nope,I never could figure that out myself o.o;
Maybe that since Tsukasa was picked by Morgana,Maha was only allowed to talk to him,Only.For Mia,seeing as she is running around on her own,she is free to do what she wants,while Morganna keeps an eye on Mia's actions.

That's what I believe,other than that,I have no clue :/

And dont worry Cobweb,there are other Maha fans out there [Me being one of them]there is even a site for a Maha fanlisting ^^; So Maha isnt forgotten,really.
