Trash Data
Trash data are incomplete NPCs that randomly appear in The World for reasons that elude CC Corp. They have existed since the prototype version of the game was in development. Some Trash Data has evolved to the status of Wandering AI. These programs do not follow their original function and are associated with the game data corruption. Because of their illicit nature, they are frequently targeted for removal from the system by System Administrators.
Lore
Unable to discern the purpose of these NPCs, CC Corp and the System Administrators call them "Incomplete Data" and opt to marking them for deletion.
In reality, these Trash Data NPCs are failed AI that Morganna developed during her experimentations. Though they are failed experiments, they possess Artificial Intelligence and some are able to form independent thought. The first AI were very simple and lacked the ability to talk or move. Most of them were incapable of hiding and thus were deleted by the System Administrators. As Morganna matured, the quality of the Trash Data improved. Some of these AI possess goals, and the particularly ambitious ones act like Player Characters. Those without a clear purpose or driving desire instinctively try to return to Morganna. Any who got too close to becoming an Ultimate AI were destroyed by Morganna.
While Trash Data could also technically be considered NPCs, since they are not controlled by a human at a Computer Terminal. However, as they are also not controlled by normal system programming, they are classified as a distinct type of entity from regular NPCs. They are also distinct from the AI that were intentionally built into the game system.

Trash Data[1]
Trash data are incomplete NPCs that
seem to appear out of thin air. These
NPCs have caused nothing but headaches
for the System Administrators at CC Corp.
since the development phase of the
prototype, Fragment. CC Corp. has not
been able to explain the purpose of these
NPCs. While the System Administrators refer to these wandering NPCs as
"Incomplete Data," they are in fact, failed
experimental AIs that Morganna had
developed. Their quality seemed to
improve as Morganna matured. -
Experimental AIs began appearing soon after
Morganna was launched at the startup of
Fragment. The first AIs were very simple, and
did not have the ability to talk, hide, or move.
Because of this, most of them wound up being
deleted by System Administrators. Some
came close to being the ultimate AI, but these
were disassembled by Morganna.
Although Trash Data are failed experiments,
they are functional AIs, and some of them
have thoughts and goals.
Wandering AIs with ambition
have continued evolving themselves to the
point where they act like PCs. A wandering
AI without any clear purpose will instinctively
try to return to Morganna.
