Hida-Takayama

Takayama (高山市, Takayama-shi) is located in northern Gifu prefecture, Japan. It is situated in the central Chūbu region on the main island of Honshu. Takayama is located in the heart of the Japanese Alps. The high altitude and isolation from the rest of Japan allowed Takayama to develop its own culture over a 300-year period.
The name 'Takayama' means 'tall mountain'. To differentiate it from other places named Takayama, the city is colloquially known as Hida-Takayama (飛騨高山) in reference to the historical Hida Province.
