『文芸秋冬』廃刊へ
1911年創刊の老舗文芸雑誌『文芸秋冬』(文芸
秋冬社発行)が来月発売号をもって廃刊すること
が決まった。誕生100年を目前に控えた今回の
決定に際し、作家や業界関係者の間から廃刊を
惜しむ声が上がっている。最盛期には100万部
近い発行部数を誇った『文芸秋冬』も、読者の文
学離れに加えてネットワークの普及に伴う出版
業界の構造変化の波に春まれ、ここ数年は公称
2~3万部にまで低迷していた。
つい先月も創刊50年の男性誌『プレイロード』が
休刊するなど、出版業界を取り巻く情勢は厳しい。
活字文化の牙城ともいうべき存在だった『文芸秋
冬』の休刊を機に、休刊や廃刊を決める雑誌が急
増するのではないか、と見る関係者も多い。小説
家・内村大観氏の談話。
「『文芸秋冬』の歴史は、そのまま我が国の文学
の歩みに等しい。同誌の廃刊は文芸秋冬社だけ
の問題ではなく、国文学界全体が抱える宿命的
欠陥を象徴するものといえる」。

International Geographic Discontinued
International Geographic, the world famous
magazine which began publication in 1911,
announced it will cease operations following
next month's issue. Industry folk and writers
immediately expressed sadness and
disappointment over the news. The magazine,
which during its best years sold one million
copies a month, will publish its last volume
just short of its 100th anniversary.
Readership had steadily declined during the
past decade, and sales recently dropped to
as low as 20, 000-30 ,000 per month.
Play Road, the famous gentleman's
magazine established over 50 years ago, also
recently closed its doors. As subscribers
increasingly turn online for their information,
the print industry has struggled to maintain
sales and advertising revenues, and it's
believed the "International Geographic"
announcement is only the beginning of an
industry wide downturn for print media.
