東京メガフロート稼動開始
東京湾沖に建造が進められていた『東京メガフロ
ート』の試験稼動が開始された。
同施設は海底に固定された土台と特殊ラバーで
連結された"ハイテク浮島"。潮流による圧力を柔
構造で受け止めるため、高い安定性を誇り、また
地震による影響もほとんど受けない。
通信省、産業省、建設運輸省を中心に民間業者
との第三セクター方式で建造が進められてきた、
足掛け4年にも及ぶ第一次工事が先月終了した
もの。『東京メガフロート』は長さ300m、幅が60
mのブロックを7つ組み合わせた構造を持ち、今
後も第二次、第三次工事が予定されている。最終
完成時には約7.2平方kmもの広大な敷地面積
を誇ることになる。
今回の試験稼動では、官民問わず増加し続けるネ
ットワーク情報の集中管理基地として設立された
「海上情報バックアップセンター」が"第一号入居
者"として業務を開始した。将来的には、コンピュ
ータ関係を中心に官民を問わずあらゆる産業を
受け入れる方針。

Tokyo Mega Float Operation Begins
Testing of Tokyo Mega Float began today in
Tokyo Bay, where construction continues on
the experimental facility. A high-tech floating
island connected by special rubber material
and a solid underwater foundation, the
structure is designed to withstand water
current pressure and will not be affected by
earthquakes. The four year project,
supported by communications, industrial
machinery, and construction authorities,
finally completed construction last month.
Tokyo Mega Float dimensions are: 300m long,
60 m wide and 7 blocks high. Second and
third stories are scheduled to be constructed
as well. Once complete, the Mega Float will
cover approximately 25 square kilometers.
As part of the experiment, the Maritime
Information Backup Center, a network
information management base, will begin
operations as the first business to move into
the location. In the future, various industries
related to computers will be welcomed.
