.hack//Liminality (ドットハック リミナリティ) is a 4 episode Original Video Animation (OVA) that was packaged and released alongside each volume of the Games Tetralogy games. Each episode takes place during approximately the same time as the game it was packaged with, and shows events that occur offline.
Plot
The plot follows three young women as they look into strange occurrences that appear to be tied to the online game, "The World." While initially their search for answers began as a solo effort, their investigations become intertwined once they come in contact with the enigmatic Mr. Tokuoka. It is through these events that players are able to see how their actions in the Games Tetralogy impact the computer network beyond the game.
Installments 1-3 focus on a specific character, for which the episode is subtitled:
.hack//Liminality: In the case of Mai Minase
.hack//Liminality: In the case of Yuki Aihara
.hack//Liminality: In the case of Kyoko Tohno
The fourth installment focuses on the culmination of their investigation and efforts as a group:
.hack//Liminality: Trismegistus
This episode is named using the Greek word that means "Thrice Greatest."
Setting
Contrary to most media in the .hack series, Liminality takes place entirely offline. The only glances at the online world are sparse, and tend to be either filtered through electronic screens or a character's memory.
