Notes
The English text is the same in the North American and PAL versions.
The Japanese and Korean versions only use black text, while the North American and PAL versions add magenta text and blue squares as bulletpoints. The Italian version is unique in that the bulleted text is also blue.
The copyright date says 2011, though the events of the Games Tetralogy take place during 2010. This may be an oversight, or may be due to the product being advertised for a future release.
In the .hack universe, virtual reality headsets are called FMDs (face-mounted displays). In reality these are frequently called virtual reality headsets, VR goggles, or HMDs (head-mounted displays).
SONES is likely parody of SONY, the company that created the PlayStation line of consoles. .hack games initially were released only on PlayStation consoles, including the PlayStation 2, PlayStation Portable, PlayStation 3, and PlayStation 4. Eventually other consoles and PC versions were also released for later games.
In Reality
In real life, Sony Interactive Entertainment (a subsidiary of Sony Group Corporation) released a few different VR headsets, including:
- The Sony Glasstron and its 5 different models (1996-1998)
- Sony PUD-J5A for the PlayStation 2 (2002)[1]
- Sony HMZ-T1 "3d viewer." (2011)
- Sony PROTOTYPE-SR (HMZ-T2)[2] (2012)
- PlayStation VR (2016)
Most were niche or intended for tech demos. There was no broad distribution, nor demand for the technology until the release of the PlayStation VR headset in 2016. While the widespread adoption of the technology occurred later than it did in the .hack series timeline, this can be counted as one of the many instances of "life imitating art" that can be attributed to the .hack series' prescience.
In 2016, multiple media outlets reported that CyberConnect2 was working on eight games, including a virtual reality game.[3]
